Welcome to January

Erik Flesch & Sara Lomasz Flesch

Welcome to 2021 and a new year of Voice of the River Valley!

As we look forward to all of the possibilities a new year offers, we’re excited to announce an opportunity to join our team in the monthly production of the free arts and culture magazine that since 2006 has been showcasing the best of this nook of Wisconsin’s Driftless Area.

In recognition of the value Voice provides to our region and the need to ensure its sustainable future, we’re seeking a Features Editor to work with us on scheduling monthly art, photography, and text content and maintaining our print and web calendars in the new year. The time commitment is expected to be up to 20 hours a month and can be done from the comfort of your home, preferably in the Voice of the River Valley coverage area, as long as stable Internet access is possible.

This month’s cover photograph of a late December evening sky at Bakken’s Pond near Spring Green was taken by Rob Steffen. Rob is a retired ad guy who now spends his time dabbling in photography, music and cats from his home in Spring Green. Many thanks to Rob for his contribution to our cover and issue! To share art or photography in a future issue of Voice of the River Valley, contact us at info@voiceoftherivervalley.com.

We’ll continue to manage advertising and graphic design services, and will partner with our network of volunteers to distribute our print magazine throughout the area. In return for the Features Editor’s services, we’re happy to offer recognition, opportunity and flexibility, plus complimentary monthly advertising support for the area business or organization of your choice. For more information and to apply, please send a letter of interest to sara@voiceoftherivervalley.com by Jan. 31. Seasoned and aspiring journalists alike are encouraged to apply.

In this first issue of the new year, we’re delighted to share the voices of Jeb Barzen, Mark Cupp, Mary Friedel-Hunt, Steve Fuller, Doris Green, John Heasley, Jennifer Moore-Kerr, Justin O’Brien, Kathy Steffen, Grace Vosen and Etienne White; photography by Richard Hurd and Rob Steffen; calendar listings; and more. (“Garden Blitz” columnist Patrice Peltier is taking a break for the winter; we look forward to the return of her gardening wit and wisdom this spring.) We’re grateful to this month’s advertisers (see p. 3) and subscribers, and to the volunteers who made distribution possible to more than 60 locations this month: Joni and Rick Graves, Linda Kelen, Mark McCauley, Brian Richter and Grace Vosen.

Whether you enjoy this month’s issue in print or online at voiceoftherivervalley.com, we wish you happy reading and a happy new year!
