Workshop: Black Ash Shallow Basket (With Songs)

July 8, 2022 @ 9:00 am

$225

Learn the art of traditional black ash basket weaving from Oneida Nation of Wisconsin basket maker Liandra Skenandore. In this class students will weave a medium-sized shallow basket made of black ash splints while experiencing the uniqueness, strength, flexibility and liveliness of this Native North American traditional weaving material. Students will cut and knife scrape splint material that has already been hand-pounded off the black ash log to create a basket that will measure approximately 12”x12”x5”. Special guest, songleader Catherine Young, will weave music into our work, threading songs of weaving, water and trees. No prior basket weaving experience necessary, but some hand strength and dexterity is required.
