Summer Youth Workshop: Adaptive Architecture (Ages 9-12)

July 29, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 9:00 am on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, repeating until August 2, 2019

In this explorative, science-based and hands-on workshop, participants will push the boundaries of what it takes to adapt to and survive in harsh environments – from scalding heat in the desert to inhabiting planet Mars!

In addition to an experienced workshop instructor, students will engage with professionals in related fields. Guest speakers will include a space ambassador and a planetary senior scientist working with Rover on Mars; both share their insights on the planet Mars. A local expert from the Department of Natural Resources will discuss basic survival skills and shelter-building techniques. Students will also engage with architecture students at Taliesin to hear their stories of building desert shelters in Arizona at Taliesin West.
Shelter for survival is one of the most basic human needs. Taliesin’s built and natural environment will fuel inspiration for individual student shelter design models. Infused with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), this workshop will challenge each student to design an adapted shelter.
The workshop will conclude with an exhibition open to family and friends. Lunch, full estate access with teaching staff and all materials are included.
