Public Tour of Moely Prairie
June 8, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Free
Moely is a 23.5-acre dry to dry-mesic remnant prairie that was spared the plow and heavy grazing. Over the past several years, Moely has undergone significant restoration with invasive brush and tree removal, and prescribed burns. It is the largest of the few remaining parcels of the original 14,000-acre Sauk Prairie and is probably best known for its thousands of prairie smoke (Geum triflorum) plants. False indigo bush (Amorpha fruticosa) also thrives on site. Since restoration work began again in earnest two years ago, almost three dozen native plant species have been noted for the first time, including prairie alumroot, prairie tickseed and purple prairie clover. Come discover with us this jewel in the making!
Meet at the end of Fullerton Avenue to enter the prairie, located in the Westwynde neighborhood of Prairie du Sac.
Long pants and sturdy, closed-toed shoes are recommended.
