Iroquois Raised Beadwork Workshop with Karen Ann Hoffman
February 9, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 4:30 pm$20
Make a 4-inch beaded heart using patterns provided by the instructor, Karen Ann Hoffman of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin.
Iroquois raised beadwork is a rare style of Native American beadwork from the Eastern Great Lakes Region. First executed with stone and shell, later with moose hair and hide, and now with velvet and glass beads, this beadwork protects and preserves Iroquois culture and world view.
During the course, each student will create a piece of raised beadwork using patterns provided by the instructor. The beadwork project will be used as a vehicle to explore Iroquois history, culture and society and its relationship to the dominant culture. At the end of the course, the student will leave with a deeper understanding of Native Woodland world view as well as a handcrafted piece of Iroquois material culture.
There will be a break for a potluck lunch at 12:00 in our hall.
