Exhibit: “BITNR etc” Design Studies for Active Solar Heating

“BITNR etc,” an exhibit by Joel H. Goodman, includes: solar collector-storage building studies (two car garages, apartments, factories) for solar heating; solar kitchens for the Tropics; bowl-buildings; small heliostats on long-span hanging roofs; and PV pergolas.
The Building Interior Tubes and Nonimaging Reflectors (BITNR, previously titled BIETR) active solar thermal concentrator collector building type is for mid temperatures (above 80C/176F) process heat applications in non-seismic snow and dust accumulation locations. A nonpublic walk-in solar collector has interior nonimaging reflectors augmenting receiver tubes with an ETFE roof. Building feasibility studies include: small and large area roof-collectors for additions and new buildings. BITNR studies are in progress with a student engineering project at the University of Minnesota. Schematic building design studies indicate active solar energy technologies are main organizing factors for building design and site planning. The BIETR (now BITNR) is recommended research that “fits into the AIA’s goals and aligns with the 2030 challenge” by the national AIA Center for Building Science and Performance.
