River Valley Birders invites the public to the 2019 Spring Green Bird Festival on May 11. Once again, we’ll have a variety of events for your viewing pleasure, ending with a Birds and Beer social event to wrap up the day.
The schedule is as follows:
Guided bird walk, 7-9 a.m., Tower Hill State Park (admission sticker required)
Join us at Tower Hill State Park as Dave Sample and Meghan Ziegler help us find and identify the interesting birds living there. Some that we are likely to see include Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Scarlet Tanagers, Indigo Buntings and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. The last time we were there with the bird festival, some of us caught sight of a Great Horned Owl! Who knows what we’ll see this year!
We’ll meet in the parking area at 7 and leave shortly afterward for our walk.
Tower Hill is a state park. Unless you have a 2019 annual sticker, plan to purchase a day pass ($8 per car, cash or check) to participate in the bird walk, and support the wonderful resources our state parks offer.
Photo exhibit and refreshments, 9:30-10 a.m., Spring Green Community Library
After the bird walk at Tower Hill, come enjoy a cup of coffee with us as you browse the bird photography exhibit and other bird-related displays.
Owls of Wisconsin, 10-11 a.m., Spring Green Community Library
Bridget Kelly of the Dane County Humane Society’s Wildlife Center will give a presentation on the owls we are fortunate to have here in Wisconsin.
Backyard Birding, 11 a.m., Spring Green Community Library
Join us for a panel presentation/discussion focused on enhancing your backyard-birding experience. Some topics we plan to cover include: how to avoid window strikes, the importance of native plants, photo taking, bird identification resources, feeding birds, bird baths and more.
Birds and Beer, 4-6 p.m., Wisconsin Riverside Resort, S13220 Shifflet Rd.
Note the change in timing of this event from previous festivals. After a morning full of birding fun, join us for a social hour or two. We’ll meet in the bar, or on the patio if the weather allows. The bird club will have some light snacks available, or buy yourself some dinner from their menu.
